Let's Vote to Bike

Be counted. Let's get out and vote. A vote to bike is a vote for a cleaner environment and a healthier future for our kids.

I'm preparing for the road ride. It should be more fun than strenuous (hopefully) --- 7 cities in the Metro! The aim is to be able to spread the message to the most number of people.

The event's rationale according to Mr. Enrique Pineda is to "...remind Filipinos that an act as simple as riding a bicycle to work, to school, to dates... is an act of being makabayan... no pollution is produced and one saves dollar reserves because there is no reliance on expensive imported fuel."

The desire to join the the Firefly Brigade in this advocacy is what finally prompted me to go back to biking. I once blogged:

"The most amazing, wonderful nature discovery for me as a child, perhaps for many children, way back then, is that of those moving twinkling lights in the night sky. They could've been stars, and I might have wished something, seeing them then shoot so; but no they are not, as one can almost grasp them. They are fireflies, grown-ups told me. How do they produce the light? Do they carry mini flashlights? Have they got electricity in their bodies? Are they not so fair, they could've been the inspiration for the tales on fairies?

I could only relate this to my 4-year old daughter. She has yet to see one. Where have all the fireflies gone?

Progress was good to our cities in many ways; but in many ways as well, in some ways even without us knowing, progress was not good at all. The air that surrounds us is dirtier than it ever was. The fireflies have fled these unclean air as these are not their habitat. Their home is where they can live, fly and breathe freely. "

Let's bring the fireflies back. Let's bring the clean air back. Let's help restore our home planet.

I actually missed their membership clinic early this year as I didn't have a bike then; but I have slowly been starting to pedal this month---getting fit, getting primed up. I heard there is a half day bike clinic at Tiendesitas this Saturday --- that I will not miss.

I'm set to register to join the Tour of Fireflies. I'm inviting friends to join in and take to biking even after this event. For those interested, one may register in the following locations:

Mr Enrique Pineda sent me a lead to these articles in the national newspapers last weekend. Do read them for more info and for the interesting story on the event:

12th Tour of Fireflies to draw 8,000 Metro Manila cyclists  in the Philippine Star

I hope to see you all there. Spread the word.

"The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun..."

Psalm 19:1-4
