This 400 sqm -house is so christened Earth, Wind and Sun. After seeing the video below, you'd know why.
The videoclip is a segment from Channel News Asia/Media Corporation of Singapore's environmental program Saving Gaia; and the featured house, is designed, built, and owned by the Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival.
Grade 1 definition for a leader is someone who leads. “Grade 1 definitions” are so basic and so clear that even young children of little education can make them. At that age, there is nary a doubt in their heads of what the word "leader" means. We reach a certain age of worldly exposure and experience that blurs for us word meanings. “Leader” may later on in life mean, someone who may lead; someone who sometimes may lead; or someone who sometimes may lead when the media is around or when he/she will be benefited.
Here is an elected leader. I do not really know him since he is from Cebu; and I am here in Manila. I am not campaigning for him ---I do not even know if he is running again--- as I have long ago decided that this blog will stay away from politics. I, however, will vouch for what he did and what he continues to do as good, admirable, and worthy of modeling after.
I received a passed on email, the sort that spreads around because they’re so good, you want to tell about it. It’s not the type of viral email that curses you and all the generations that will follow you to ill fortune if you do not pass the email forward. I wish to thank the person who sent me the email, though I am not sure she wants her name printed. Thank you for sharing. A good example should be shown to as many of us as possible. Thank you also for not attaching any curse to the email, as you never do so.
The email is about a jeepney made of bamboo and sawali and the eco-house. I’ve blogged about the former, months back, thus we’d just focus on the house.
What is a green house? Grade 1 definition would be: a house that is green. This time, the definition begs to ask what is green; hence it is no clear definition. I do not blame and will not laugh at those who haven’t yet been exposed to these progressive principles, and who would think it’s just about the color.
A green house is the structure and the environs that shelter, protect, and nurture life. It is the habitat for safe, healthy and happy living. It is a house where one can breathe clean air; a house that is not too cold and not too warm; a house that is not too humid and too dry; a house that gets light from the sun during the day; a house that can let air move in and out as desirable; a house that conserves water and energy; a house that was constructed with mostly local materials, some of which maybe reused or recycled; a house conducive to sustainable living.
What is meant by sustainable living? It means that one lives in a way that does not take away the “brightness” in the future that we all dream for our children and their children. The future generations will enjoy life as we know it or much better than we know it---clean air and water, sufficient supply of food and other material necessities, biodiverse surroundings, or simply a life abundant for all species.
As you’ve seen in the video, you may make your house green by the following ways.
- Apply the principles of 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle
- Manage your wastes well: segregate and compost
- Utilize the free and abundant sources of energy, the sun, wind, and biomass
- Use materials from local sources, those that need not cross long distances to reach you
There are many other ways, and we shall discuss them, through other examples we shall find later.
Do you know of another good example of a green house? You might want to share them here?

WORD FROM THE SPONSOR
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
Psalm 23
