Of the 50 bright new ideas screened and selected by TIME Magazine, which are eco-friendly? Let’s select from the selection.
No. 2: The Tank-Bred Tuna. The breeding population of tuna has gone down by about 90% since the 1950s. Hagen Stehr of Clean Seas Australia just did what many said can’t be done --- aquaculture for the bluefin!
No. 3: LED bulb by Philips that can emit the same amount of light as the common 60watt incandescent bulb but uses less than 10 watts only and last 25 times longer!
No. 4 : The Smart Thermostat or the EnergyHub Dashboard by Seth Frader-Thomson. It’s like your fuel consumption in your car only much better and only not for the car but for your house. I actually tells you how much energy you are consuming already and how much it is costing you. There’s also the function to automatically shut devices off or automatically control temperatures just so power consumption can be moderated.
No. 12 The Personal Carbon Footprint. Take it personally. Finally we can keep tab of our own decisions’ and actions’ effects on the environment. It’s like our personal weigh scale. Are we getting obese? It’s time, to eat in moderation.
No. 13 : The Solar Shingle. Dow Chemicals Co. will soon mass produce and market these mini-solar panels cum roofing materials. They’re designed to cost 10%-15% cheaper and easier to install than traditional solar panels.
No. 15 : The YikeBike is a folding electric bicycle. It can be charged to 80% capacity in 20 minutes.
No. 16 : Vetical Farming. Growing population, diminishing land for crops = food woes. Solution: plant in multiple storeys!
No. 17 : The Planetary Skin. It’s a global “nervous system” that will integrate land-, sea-, air- and space-sensors, helping everyone make decisions to prevent and adapt to climate change.
No. 20 : The Electric Microbe. We’ve heard of good bacteria being good for digestion and a host of other things, but good bacteria for power generation?
No. 25 : the Nissan Leaf. This could be the electric car model that can finally make electric cars a standard. Top speed: 145 km/hr. Range: 160kms on fullcharge. The questions are how much will it cost, and will the infrastructure for recharging be ready soon?
No. 27 : The Universal Unicycle. It’s a product off what was learned in the Honda ASIMO robot project. It allows drivers to scoot in any direction simply by shifting weights. It’s likewise powered by a battery pack.
No. 29 : Dandelion Rubber. Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology has found an alternative to rubber trees as sources for rubber --- dandelions!
No. 31 : The Living Wall. Patrick Blanc can grow gardens of multiple plant varieties up a vertical wall. He’s made it possible for us to do so too.
No. 34 : The Human-Powered Vending machine. Pedal a stationary bike to get your snacks at the same time losing some of the calories you’re about to gain.
No. 37 : Improved Packing algorithm. Johannes Schneider developed it and it’s supposed to come up with the most efficient way to pack things. This means delivery trips can be optimized whether they be by land, sea or air.
No. 40 : The Edible Race Car. “If it’s impossible for a race car to be “good” for the environment, maybe, it can at least be a little friendlier…It has carrot fibers in its steering wheel, potato starch in its side mirrors, and cashew-nut shells in its break pads. The whole thing runs on a biodiesel mix of chocolate and vegetable oil” If “amusing” can start a race to developing truly green cars, then there’s some worth to this invention.
A third of TIME’s 2009 choices are green or has shades of green. Necessity inspires invention. There’s much need for new things that can work for us in ways that are truly sustainable. WORD FROM THE SPONSOR
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal
